Increased Coastal Nutrient Loading Enhances Reproductive Intensity of Zostera marina: Implications for Seagrass Meadow Resilience

چکیده
Because sexual reproduction is essential for the establishment and persistence of seagrass meadows, flowering intensity an important trait that influences resilience stability populations. Although effects excessive coastal nutrient loading on vegetative growth have been extensively documented, reproductive phenology remain unclear. To examine responses populations to increased loading, Zostera marina were compared between sites with high-nutrient, low-light conditions (Deukryang Bay Dongdae Bay) low-nutrient, high-light (Koje southern coast Korea. Nutrient contents above- below-ground tissues Z. reflected in situ light availability at study sites. Reproductive shoot density biomass, as well frequency effort, much higher (1.5–4.6-fold) Deukryang than site Koje Bay. Consequently, potential seed production was Chronic high-nutrient significantly , supporting The results this could provide insights into conservation management meadows under loading.

Moderate Increase in TCO2 Enhances Photosynthesis of Seagrass Zostera japonica, but Not Zostera marina: Implications for Acidification Mitigation
Photosynthesis and respiration are vital biological processes that shape the diurnal variability of carbonate chemistry in nearshore waters, presumably ameliorating (daytime) or exacerbating (nighttime) short-term acidification events, which are expected to increase in severity with ocean acidification (OA). Biogenic habitats such as seagrass beds have the capacity to reduce CO2 concentration a...
متن کاملSeasonal Growth and Senescence of a Zostera marina Seagrass Meadow AltersWave-Dominated Flow and Sediment Suspension Within a Coastal Bay
Tidally driven flows, waves, and suspended sediment concentrations were monitored seasonally within a Zostera marina seagrass (eelgrass) meadow located in a shallow (1–2 m depth) coastal bay. Eelgrass meadows were found to reduce velocities approximately 60 % in the summer and 40 % in the winter compared to an adjacent unvegetated site. Additionally, the seagrass meadow served to dampen wave he...
متن کاملToxic effects of increased sediment nutrient and organic matter loading on the seagrass Zostera noltii.
As a result of anthropogenic disturbances and natural stressors, seagrass beds are often patchy and heterogeneous. The effects of high loads of nutrients and organic matter in patch development and expansion in heterogeneous seagrass beds have, however, poorly been studied. We experimentally assessed the in situ effects of sediment quality on seagrass (Zostera noltii) patch dynamics by studying...
متن کاملTranscriptomic resilience to global warming in the seagrass Zostera marina, a marine foundation species.
Large-scale transcription profiling via direct cDNA sequencing provides important insights as to how foundation species cope with increasing climatic extremes predicted under global warming. Species distributed along a thermal cline, such as the ecologically important seagrass Zostera marina, provide an opportunity to assess temperature effects on gene expression as a function of their long-ter...
متن کاملFacilitation of seagrass Zostera marina productivity by suspension-feeding bivalves
Seagrasses and suspension feeders are both critical ecosystem engineers in estuaries. Seagrass beds are important structural habitats, and suspension feeders, when abundant, can regulate phytoplankton densities. Furthermore, there may be mutual facilitation of growth and recruitment between seagrasses and suspension-feeding bivalves. In a series of mesocosm experiments, the effects of environme...
